The rise and shine special at Cafe Kopi is the way to seize the day

Cafe Kopi announced a new morning special: in the first hour, any breakfast sandwich and a coffee is $3.50. The catch is that you have to be there before 8 a.m. Oof, that’s hard to do, but I am an early bird, and for important research, I tried the rise and shine special.

I made it by 7:30 and ordered two different sandwiches: the smoky and the sausage, egg, and cheese, plus two cups of brewed coffee.

My total for two of the rise and shine specials was less than $8, before tax and tip. I felt shiny for sure, being out and starting my day with a solid breakfast from a local coffeeshop all before 8 a.m.

The sausage, egg, and cheese was a hot breakfast bagel sandwich made on a choice of bagels or English muffin. I chose an everything bagel, and it paired well with the classic combination of sausage, egg, and cheese. The cheddar melted into the lightly toasted bagel. The peppery sausage and everything seasoning elevated the egg. It was a tasty breakfast sandwich that was clearly cooked to order. There wasn’t any fancy sauce on it, but it was simple, good breakfast sandwich.

I also ordered the smoky sandwich, made with bacon, cheese, egg, and a chipotle sauce, and I chose a sesame bagel. Just like the everything bagel, the sesame bagel had a great bagel chew. The pepperjack cheese and chipotle sauce had spicy flavors that woke my mouth right up. The heat made the egg and bagel so tasty, and that much flavor was a pretty exhilarating way to start the day.

The coffees included in the morning special are hot drip coffee. I know a lot of people love this, and the dark roast was fantastic. If you don’t love drip coffee (I prefer cold brew coffee with a shot of caramel), you can add a splash of caramel syrup for 75 cents like I did. It hit like a hot cold brew.

If you can make it before 8 a.m., the $3.50 special is yours for the taking, early birds. If you can’t, the sandwiches and coffee are still available but at regular prices. You can order online for pickup here or visit the Downtown Champaign coffeeshop in person.
