Oksana Masters, the decorated Paralympic athlete that lives and trains here in Champaign-Urbana, was interviewed by Soledad O’Brien for Real Sports on HBO. Masters was born in Ukraine with severe physical defects due to radiation poisoning from the Chernobyl disaster, and was eventually adopted by Gay Masters, a Champaign native. She now competes in Nordic cross-country skiing, biathalon, rowing, and cycling, and has medaled in both the winter and summer paralympic games.
