Champaign-Urbana has seen an uptick in gun violence over the past couple months, with one incident occurring outside a Champaign Central/Danville basketball game. The Champaign PTA Council, an organization made up of PTA representatives from each Unit 4 School, is hosting a town hall on January 17th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Illinois Terminal to discuss gun violence in the community. Local school and community leaders will be a part of the panel discussion. All community members are encouraged to attend; you do not need to be PTA member or Unit 4 parent. Here are the specifics from the Facebook event page. Full version of the flyer below.
We will be discussing the recent shootings in the Champaign community.
Confirmed panelists include:
Chief Anthony Cobb - Champaign Police
Julie Rietz - Champaign County States Attorney
Chief Deputy Allen Jones - Champaign County Sheriff's Dept
Tracy Parsons - Community Relations, City of Champaign
Superintendent Dr. Susan Zola - Champaign Unit 4 Schools
Dr. Nicole Cobb - Anti-Gun Violence Activitist
Lauren Quinn - Moms Demand Action
We will discuss the various facets of gun violence - and what we, as parents, can do to support preventative efforts of government bodies, as well as what resources we can support to strengthen local families.
***Special performance by Champaign Central High School's dance team! ***
The event is sponsored by the PTA Council, but is open to the entire Champaign-Urbana area.
