From the press release:

Historic, Non-Profit, Vegetarian Restaurant Kicks Off Grow Campaign With Fundraiser

Urbana, IL: In a few days, the thirty-plus year vegetarian staple for college students and the community alike, will be launching a new campaign to conduct educational projects and invest in needed kitchen items.

The Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant, started by the Channing-Murray Foundation to promote Unitarian-Universalist principles, began to be a hotbed of counter-culture in the areas of food, music, and campaigns targeted at social issues. Continuing in that work, the Red Herring Restaurant will hold a three-course fundraiser dinner for their supporters and the general public the evening of Monday, July 13 at 5:30p.m. at 1209 W. Oregon Street in Urbana. Organizers of the event are suggesting a donation of twenty-five to fifty dollars per person, while children under five can eat for free.

“We pride ourselves on providing healthy, locally sourced food for our community,” Holly Curia, manager of The Red Herring said.  “The response from local community members, musicians, and organizations has been amazing, we are looking forward to a great event that will go a long way to sustaining this historic restaurant for years to come.”

The fundraiser will feature local jazz and folk musicians as well as performances from a group specializing in West African Dance.  Local artisans (Jade Micenheimer, Jodi Adams, and Sage Lundquist) offering handmade crafts, and local buisnesses (Common Ground Food Co-Operative, World Harvest, Urban Acupuncture, Reflect Yoga Studio, Living Yoga Center) offering gift certificates, will be raffled off to raise additional funds. The Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant also created a GoFundMe campaign to allow their supporters who cannot attend the fundraiser to lend their financial support by going to

About Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant: The Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant has been serving the Urbana-Champaign community for over thirty years. It was started by the Channing-Murray Foundation as a way to put Unitarian-Universalist principles into action. The Red Herring, a program of Channing Murray Foundation, is not-for-profit, meaning all the money taken in goes back into making the restaurant better for staff and customers, and to keeping our prices accessible to community members trying to live a healthy vegetarian lifestyle. Cooperatively run, the Herring serves lunch five days a week from 11am-3pm, and
dinner on Wednesdays from 5pm-8pm. We are committed to providing healthier lunch alternatives by cooking from scratch.
