Current Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin has filed for re-election (the next election is April 2021). First elected in 2017, Marlin is running on her expereince

lead[ing] the charge to restore Urbana’s financial health. Under her leadership, the city has eliminated a $2.5 million structural budget deficit, restored pension funding, repaid outstanding short-term loans, rebuilt the city’s financial reserves, and strengthened relationships with community partners.

Urbana Mayor Diane Wolfe Marlin Files for Re-election

Marlin cites success in restoring city’s financial health, laying the groundwork for infrastructure improvements, and committing to redefining public safety in her first term

URBANA— Urbana Mayor Diane Wolfe Marlin filed petitions Monday morning to formally seek a second term leading the city. Video of her announcement can be viewed here.

“We’ve made much progress in the last four years,” said Mayor Marlin. “But we face many challenges moving forward, and I want to continue to lead our efforts to make Urbana a healthy, resilient, and equitable community.”

Since taking office in 2017, Mayor Marlin has led the charge to restore Urbana’s financial health. Under her leadership, the city has eliminated a $2.5 million structural budget deficit, restored pension funding, repaid outstanding short-term loans, rebuilt the city’s financial reserves, and strengthened relationships with community partners.

Mayor Marlin made public infrastructure a focus of her first term in office.  Her work included an assessment of the condition of all city streets, stormwater system, and facilities.   This data will guide systematic major investment in infrastructure improvements.

Joined by Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen, Mayor Marlin has helped make Champaign-Urbana one of the leading communities in the state in the battle against COVID-19. Through early adoption of recommendations from the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District and in close collaboration with the University of Illinois, Urbana and Champaign are two of the communities keeping infection rates in check compared to the rest of the state and nation. As our nation and state experiences a surge in infections, Mayor Marlin is committed to working with community leaders, the University of Illinois, and medical professionals to reduce spread of the virus. She is focused on protecting residents, helping local businesses remain operational, protecting health care workers and first responders, and safeguarding every member of the community.

Mayor Marlin is committed to redefining public safety and well-being in the city. She will continue to build bridges in the community to help bring about needed change.

Diane Wolfe Marlin has lived in Urbana since 1971. She earned a B.S. in Human Development and an M.S. in Foods and Nutrition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She worked as a Registered Dietitian and Affiliate Faculty member at Parkland College and retired from the University of Illinois as Coordinator of Research Programs in the Family Resiliency Center, Department of Human and Community Development.

Diane and her husband, John, have two grown children who attended Cooperative Nursery School, Leal School, Urbana Middle School, and Urbana High School. They care deeply about the local environment and natural areas in the region and have grown native woodland wildflowers to make them available to local schools, parks, and homeowners interested in sustainable landscaping. In addition to being Mayor, Diane’s favorite “job” is being “Grandma” to her two grandsons.
