The Overture: March 4–10

EDITOR’S PICK: PHOX, GRANDKIDS, MINOR CHARACTERS, COLD FRONTS
Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7) — Thursday, March 7th at 7 p.m.

With a pleasant surprise announcement last week, Grandkids’ long-awaited full length debut is going to be released this coming Thursday at Mid By Midwest. The show features a handful of great acts heading down to Austin for South By Southwest, which is happening all next week, featuring a gazillion bands. You can catch some of those bands here this week at Mike ‘N Molly’s.

Although no details of Grandkids’ release are out in the public world at this moment, we’re pretty excited to hear what they’ve cooked up over the past year or so. We’ll have a closer look later this week when we preview this show.

WHAT: Yonder Mountain String Band, The Deadly Gentlemen

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($20 advance/$25 door)

WHEN: Thursday, March 7th at 8:30 p.m.

Jam-folk legends Yonder Mountain String Band are no strangers to Canopy Club and are stopping through this week. When I think of jam and bluegrass, I want it to be warm outside where it makes it more enjoyable, but this will have to do. This show is bound to be packed as well. We’ll be taking a closer look at this show later on this week as a preview.

WHAT: Dan Hubbard, Kate Myers, Lonely Trailer, Huckleberry Fate

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Friday, March 8th at  8:30 p.m.

Dan Hubbard & The Humadors out of Bloomington bring their own version of folk/blues to Cowboy Monkey with locals Lonely Trailer and Huckleberry Fate with the addition of Indy’s Kate Myers. Hubbard and his gang have a few other dates lined up in the next few months, but you can catch them here in town before you’re unable to for a while.

WHAT: Ill Gates, DJ Solo, Positive Vibr8ions, D1rty No1ze and Durt Russell

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($10 advance/$12 door)

WHEN: Friday, March 8th at 9 p.m.

Chalice Dubs Masquerade is back with a handful of acts to pump up Canopy Club on Friday. Toronto’s Ill Gates headlines with his share of bass and dub music.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: Laughboy, Chest Pain, Soap Scum, Earth Witch

WHERE: Red Herring ($4)

WHEN: Saturday, March 9th at 2 p.m.

An afternoon show is always a good way to mix things up, especially on a weekend. Noise/punkers Laughboy (ex-Diamond Stretch member Greg Clow) leads this one with Texas crew Chest Palm, Soap Scum, and locals Earth Witch.

WHAT: Psychic Twin, ProLogic Rebel Base Ensemble, Federal Crimes

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, March 9th at 9 p.m.

Psychic Twin has been recieving a ton of love from the internet recently. Two track debuts from Stereogum just about sums up how much the blogosphere is buzzing for these new tracks they’re releasing. “Strangers” b/w “Dream State” is getting a release on C-U’s own Polyvinyl Records at the beginning of April, and I’m sure this show will be a chance to see a bunch of other new tracks as well, live in person.

WHAT: Hoodie Allen, Aer, Jared Evan

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($20 advance)

WHEN: Saturday, March 9th at 9:30 p.m.

Steven Markowitz, aka Hoodie Allen, has been enlisted to perform for this Alzheimer’s Benefit show at Canopy Club this weekend, sponsored by a sorority on the U of I campus. Comparisons come from Asher Roth (naturally) as a white rapper, and although it’s along the same lines, there are differences between the two. He released his last album in 2012 entitled All American, which debuted #1 on the iTunes charts, if that means anything anymore.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: Canoe Canoe, Sonny Stubble, Love Toy

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, March 9th at 9:30 p.m.

Canoe Canoe hails from Chicago and started out when ex-Santah bassist Otto Stuparitz and Tony Jones decided to record some songs together. It then became a full-time project, which is coming through Champaign this weekend. We’ll take a closer look at this show later in the week, as Maggie is set to discuss the project with Stuparitz.

WHAT: Enta, Foxing, Jeremy Wuan, Mountain Babies, Joseph Toth

WHERE: Red Herring ($5)

WHEN: Sunday, March 10th at 9 p.m.

Sunday punk show going down over at Red Herring. Busy weekend for that venue with back-to-back shows, this one featuring local post-punk outfit Enta, St. Louis’s Foxing, amongst a bunch of others. You can check out one of our favorite tracks from 2012 from Enta, entitled “Become,” over at that article.
